      • The LDM80 is a small,inexpensive fiber optictransmitter/receiver completelypowered by the hostRS-232 port. The enclosure forthe LDM80 is a conductive shellwhich greatly reduces RFradiation and susceptibility. Therugged metal enclosure is smallenough to mount on the backpanel of typical computerequipment saving valuable deskand floor space.

      A pair of theseunits allows most RS-232Ccable links to be replaced andextended with a duplex fiberoptic cable. The normal 50-footRS-232 limit may be extended to2.2 miles (3.5 km). Fiber opticdata communications providecomplete EMI/RFI rejection,isolation, elimination of groundloops, and reduced error rates.Data security is enhanced byalmost nonexistentelectromagnetic emissions. TheRS-232 connection is throughmale or female EIA 25-pinconnectors. The fiber opticconnection is either throughSMA (905) or ST connectors.

      The LDM80 is equivalent to a3-wire, full duplex, RS-232circuit. Handshake signals arelocally connected (see Figure 1. on PDF)Indicating LEDs come on duringa "SPACE" on transmit orreceive data. A TD/RD reversingDIP switch is provided forconnection to DTE (DataTerminal Equipment) or DCE (Data CommunicationEquipment) ports. The LDM80 optical transmittermay be used with a wide rangeof fiber sizes. Specifications arefor 100/140µm. Other fiber sizesmay be used with a resultingdifferent cable loss budget.
